What doesn't kill us only makes us sleepier

I know I keep saying that I'm getting to old to go out anymore, but I suppose I'm a glutton for punishment. Last night was another late night.

It started out benignly enough. Demian and I had bought tickets to see Wayne Brady perform at the San Jose Improv, mostly because we were just curious about what he would do. Would he be the old white grandma favorite of "Who's Line Is It Anyway?" or the crack-head pimp of "The Chappelle Show"? Turned out, he was a little bit of both. The format was like that of "Who's Line Is It Anyway"--improv style, audience participation, etc., but not as clean as on the show--we did see flashes of "Does Wayne Brady need to slap a b*tch?" throughout the evening. It actually started out really funny--Wayne Brady is obviously a really talented guy (although his improv partner was inexperienced and kind of lame), and there were points where I was laughing so hard my stomach hurt and tears ran down my eyes. But once he started asking people to come up on stage, things took a turn for the worse. He just had to pick the four most idiotic, drunk, 19-year-old white chicks (actually--I think one was a guy) to "help" him in the skit by being props. It was like watching a car crash, only less interesting. The comedy just kind of petered out at the end, which was too bad.

After Wayne Brady, Demian and I stopped back at his place to watch part 1 of the season finale of "Top Chef" (it's quite bad this season--no real talents to speak of) before heading to Blush in Burlingame for Celi's birthday party. Given our last experience at Studio 8, I was hoping for a better club experience--no such luck. Since we were on the guestlist, there was supposed to be no cover as long as we got in before 11, so we arrived at 10:30. Given that it was cold and rainy, we expected no line and that the club would pretty much be empty. TOO BAD FOR US! When we arrived, there was a huge line snaking out the door--a line that didn't appear to be moving at all. We ended up waiting in line for over an HOUR in the rain, which was only made better by the fact that I brought my awesome ducky umbrella (hehe) and that we were waiting in line with some of Demian's cool peeps from SCU. Since it was after 11:30 by the time we got to the door, the door lady was going to charge us $20 cover EACH (!!!!!!) to get in, but Billium amazed us all with his smooth-talking skills and was able to negotiate the price down to $5 each to get VIP access--way to go, Billium!

To be honest, inside the club wasn't much better than outside--slightly warmer, but just as moist (ew!) and surprisingly PACKED with people. The people who filled the club were really aggressive and not exactly attractive, and the music was not my type (hip-hop, but not the sugar-coated kind I like laff). The best part of the evening was just hanging upstairs with Demian's friends and seeing people I haven't seen in awhile. Our biggest mistake was attempting to go downstairs to get our dance on. When we realized that the entire club was full of MEN dancing with EACH OTHER, we tried to go back upstairs. Again, TOO BAD FOR US! Apparently, the second floor was "too full" and so the bouncer wasn't letting anyone up, even though people kept coming down. This was particularly frustrating because all we wanted to do was get upstairs, grab our jackets and bounce. We waited at the bottom of the stairs behind an increasing long, restless, aggressive line (people kept pushing in front of us)--at some point, some of the idiots at the front of the line tried to push through and got pwned by the bouncer, who pushed the whole crowd back (scary!!!). Some guys even got thrown out of the club for getting too rough. WTF, people! Man, I'd take Studio 8 with its too-cool-to-dance-Asians-standing-in-a-corner-all-night any day over this ludicrousness. At least in San Jose I don't fear for my life! We ended up waiting for at least 20 minutes before we were able to get back upstairs, at which point we got our coats and ran for the hills. No more Burlingame clubs for us, yo! What I really need is a cute 80s club that opens at like 8p.m. so I can get my dance on and leave by 10 p.m. lol--I am such a grandma. Maybe that's why I like Wayne Brady heh.

aww man. I've been disappear-ed for much too long on this site as well! For things I've been up to you can just read Siu's blog post below this, but I still need to post about my xmas loot.

Lately, besides work and school, I've been working on coding and designing stuff for a a personal site which I shall unveil once completed. O la la. The real reason for me posting today however is *drumm roollll*

I was driving home today from work... and wanted to go into a left lane but there was a car (Scion) driving slow just behind me and to the left of me... just slow enough that he would eventually pass me... but would take like 5 minutes to do so. So what I normally do is I just flip on my left turn signal even though I know its physically impossible to change lanes... and that usually speeds them up. So he sped up and I finally moved into the lefter lane and I was thinking in my head "Thats right foo! drive faster!"... but the car in front of me got me with ultimate come book via personalized licenese plate:

This was a tough week. It's probably been the closest I've felt to burning out in awhile. I had worked seven days the previous week, despite the holiday, and by Wednesday this week, I was just spent--didn't help that I was having trouble sleeping at night because I thinking about things at work. This new commute also kind of bites--sure it's only 20 minutes, but it's 20 minutes on 101, whereas before I'd only have to drive about 10 minutes on Alameda and Sand Hill. Can't complaint too much though--I'm digging my own (!!!) office.

So given the crazy week, Saturday was so great. Demian and I drove down to the Main Street Grill in Half Moon Bay to try what has been praised as the best eggs benedict ever. The neighborhood is totally cute--it's a lot like downtown Los Gatos, just not as fancy and yuppy-esque. The eggs benedict were decent--maybe not the best ever--but it was just so nice to spend some time away from anything work-related. The weather was perfect. After brunch, we drove down to the San Mateo Aaron Brothers to get some comic art framed for my office, and to pick up some of Demian's custom matting and glass. Then Demian humored me by taking me to an open house for a townhome in Mountain View (I love open houses!)--it was right in downtown, just a couple blocks from Cafe Verde (which, by the way, had a major overhaul--I hardly recognized the interior!). The townhouse was okay, but not my style--it was three stories, basically straight up--no open space. I'm a big fan of open floorplans, which are great for families and entertaining. In any case, I just like window-shopping for houses, so it was a wonderful, relaxing way to spend the afternoon. We ended up next at Stanford Shopping Center, where Demian got a haircut and I got a cute cropped leather jacket on sale at Gap and some adorable sparkly chandelier earrings from BR. And to cap off a fabulous day, we went home and watched "Top Chef" and Jeremy Piven on SNL while munching on RoundTable Pizza. One of the best days in a long time.

Today, I continued my retail therapy at Hillsdale with my mom--got myself some adorable, whiskey-colored loafers from BR (I love how comfy shoes are in now!) and some other girly stuff. Went over to Demian's again to watch this past week's episode of Smallville--so awesome! The Justice League has formed! It's only a matter of time before Clark gets his supersuit and the series ends. How exciting!

Anyway, I just wanted to pop in since it's been awhile--typing non-work-related content is actually pretty relaxing. Desperate Housewives is on in a half hour, so I better go! Toodleoo!

No, no, I'm not dead yet

Le sigh. I have been neglecting my blog! I still have to finish writing up that review of Michael Mina, but sadly, am not particularly motivated to do so, since it didn't turn out to be that fabulous of an experience (although it also doesn't help that I've been short on free time lately). Since I've also eaten at Aqua when Michael Mina was head chef there, I've decided that I just don't like Chef Mina's style.

Things have been such a whirlwind, I'm having trouble remembering what has happened since the last time I blogged. Probably the major highlight was getting the flu a couple of days before New Year's, and thusly NOT having an awesome time playing burnout like last year. Lately, I've been daydreaming about traveling to far off places--specifically, Australia. I imagine that it'd combine the best of everything--cosmopolitan cities, adventurous outback, serene beaches. Mmmmmm.

Anyway, sorry for the random, uneventful post, but I'm off to watch Grey's Anatomy!
